Just last week, a friend rallied a small group of us to help a family friend clean up following the tornado that hit in Marshalltown. It was a happy and sad moment. We were sad for all the individuals, families, and businesses affected by the storm’s devastation, but glad to see the support and love of neighbor helping neighbor. It was a great time for my son and I to serve alongside my friend and his son.
From July 21 - 29, we had a number of Big House staff and volunteers lead the Caravan trip to Florida, while another staff team helped lead Power Connection, an event for Junior High Students in Kansas City. Both of these events would not have happened without the talents and passions of many, including many of our staff and faithful volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of the next generation.
So what do these events and countless others like it in our church body have in common? They are catalyzed and organized through ordinary people, leaders who decided to get outside themselves and make an investment in others.
As one of our key strategies we believe will help you follow Jesus faithfully and experience the fullness of life that Jesus would want for you, ‘investing in others’ is not just a one-time event, but a way of life. It is exactly the kind of life Jesus lived and asked us to emulate as his followers. It is a willingness to go beyond ourselves and pay attention to and invest in those around us.
In order to help you find your passion and grow as a servant leader who is investing in others, we have a number of opportunities to be well equipped-- especially in the month of August! The first great opportunity is The Global Leadership Summit, August 9-10. This world-class event will gather more than 300,000 leaders from around the globe to inspire and challenge us to be a better people of influence in our homes, neighborhoods, churches, and workplaces. You might even consider serving these two days. Our team still has room for some help and each year our volunteers do an incredible job of hosting guests from our community and beyond.
Sunday, August 26, is The Gathering, at the Gallagher Bluedorn on UNI’s campus. The Gathering serves as an engaging time of worship as all our campuses gather under one roof. We want to give praise to God, celebrate his goodness, and consider how we might live out of the overflow of God’s grace. It is yet another opportunity for you to consider how you will invest your life in the days ahead.
Another learning and equipping opportunity, is the Leadership Huddle, Tuesday, August 28. It is a time to gather with our ministry teams across our campuses to be inspired and challenged as we get ready to launch into our fall programming season.
These next several weeks are critical times for many of our ministries to be finding people who have a desire to make a difference in the lives of others and courageous enough to step out and invest themselves. From hosting a group in your home, to volunteering with one of our student ministries, to serving on one of our hospitality teams, we hope you will step up and out in faith.
Please join us in praying for a great start to our fall ministry season!
