Orchard Hill on a Mission

Brian Steenhoek, Jeff Mickey, Doug Tensen

Summer Surge

Summer is a time for hiking in the woods, golfing, boating, swimming, grilling, fire pits, vacations, time with friends and family and a whole host of other activities we don't often do in the other seasons of the year. So, it is exciting to see the days lengthening, the temperatures soaring, and the calendar telling us that the unofficial start to summer has begun.

With the approach of the summer season comes a different rhythm of work and play which has inspired our new teaching series “Rest”. This series will invite us to step into summer and stop to enjoy the rest of God. We hope to dispel misconceptions about Sabbath and Sabbath keeping while reminding us that God gives us permission and freedom to uniquely experience the gift of Sabbath.

Summer also is a time when our church provides different opportunities for people to encounter and follow Jesus to bless a broken world. Here are just some of the summer events and fun you might remember to participate in and pray for:

VBS - Vacation Bible School remains one of our most important outreach ministries of the year. VBS will be taking place on all our campuses throughout the summer. “Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus” takes place June 11-14, in Cedar Falls, July 23-26, in Waverly, and July 30-August 2, in Grundy County. Lots of kids and lots of opportunities to serve! Check our website or campus sites for ways you can help!

Picnic in the Park - Picnic in the Park is a partnership with Harvest Vineyard Church which allows us to be a welcoming presence in the Walnut Neighborhood outside the four walls of our churches. Together, Harvest and Orchard Hill practice hospitality and the love of Jesus by reaching out to neighbors through a meal, fellowship, and worship in Lincoln Park, Waterloo. It is a great way to serve and be a welcoming presence!

All In Sports Camp - This is an exciting ministry for students ages 10-14, to help them encounter and follow Jesus through sports. The goal of this ministry is to teach Christ-like character traits and athletic skills to youth through sports camp. This summer, camps for girls and boys basketball, soccer, cross country, and a father/son camp will all be taking place at our Cedar Falls Campus.

“United” - A Community Worship Event - July 8 @ 10:30 am in Grundy Center. This is an annual worship event with the churches in Grundy County that culminate the Felix Grundy Days Celebration. You can join in worship at the Grundy Center High School Auditorium.

CARAVAN - Our annual trip for High School students heads to Pensacola Florida, July 21 - 29. This is a high-energy adventure camp that will include high school students from around the Cedar Valley!

The Global Leadership Summit - August 9 - 10, we will again be a host site at our Cedar Falls Campus for this impactful event. The Summit is an annual 2-day event put on by the Willow Creek Association. The theme and focus “Everyone has Influence” coincides with our value that ‘everyone is a leader’. The line-up of speakers/faculty for this year’s event promises to make this a truly inspiring experience to help you grow in your influence. We hope you will join us!

The Gathering - August 26 - Our Annual Worship Event at the Gallagher-Bluedorn on the campus of UNI, brings all our campuses and ministries to one place with the goal of bringing glory to God as we worship together and celebrate all God has done and anticipate what God will do as we kick-off our new ministry year. Put this on your calendar!

These are just some of the amazing things that are happening this summer! We hope you will pray with us for their lasting kingdom impact and participate with us as you are able!

Orchard Hill Church will join with partner Harvest Vineyard this summer for the 8th season of Picnic in the Park. Together, we will offer a meal and worship in Waterloo's Lincoln Park for the purpose of gathering together and building relationships. It is a chance to serve and eat together; a beautiful picture of the kingdom of God here on Earth.

We are in need of 30 volunteers each Picnic to help serve between 11 am and 1:30 pm. Areas of service include hospitality, food service, children's activities, prayer, and clean-up. We also need food prep volunteers that come on Saturday mornings for a few hours in the OHC kitchen. PIP a great place for individuals, families, and small groups to step into service with our local partners at Harvest Vineyard Church.

We’d also love to invite you to just come and check it out, bring your family, come worship, and have lunch. This is also a great way to meet our partners and experience it for yourself. To sign up, go to or contact Kris Hoskinson via email.

June 4 | 4:30-6 pm | Urban Gallery, 200 E 4th St, Waterloo | FREE

The Youth Art Team Urban Gallery project was a collaboration among students from: Arts to End Violence, Lowell Elementary, UNI Art Foundations, Waterloo Writing Project & Youth Art Team. This Event is co-sponsored by the Waterloo Center for the Arts.

The new Youth Art Team Urban Gallery Installation project is supported, in part, by the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, the National Endowment for the Arts, R.J.
