Thursday, November 16: Pressed down, shaken together and running over
How we think impacts how we live our whole lives. God wants to transform us, to make us more and more like Jesus, by changing the way we think—what the Bible calls the renewing of our minds. For five weeks, we'll survey five aspects of how God can and will change our minds, along with a prayer challenge for each week.
Read Luke 6:38
"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
Leading up to this passage, Jesus was teaching the Golden Rule—treating others as you'd want them to treat you—and about loving our enemies and forgiveness in place of judgment. But this command comes with a promise. If you give a cup, you'll get back an overflowing cup. If you give an hour, you may receive two in return. The amount you love, care for, serve, teach, donate, forgive, and on and on, will be given back to you, and then some!
Are you sowing yourself sparingly or abundantly for Jesus? Analyze your yearly and daily giving—and not just money. Are you giving your family time when you're home from work? Do you connect with your friends in meaningful ways? Are you investing in developing yourself? Are you helping the needy and the widows? And so importantly, how are you investing in your relationship with God?
A prayer for the week
God, thank you for the gift of another day and the opportunities it brings. You are a good and generous God. Help me to live today with great anticipation of the abundant goodness you're bringing to me and those around me. Renew my mind so that I can see your good life, join in it, share it, and invite others to join in. Amen.
