Friday, November 17: You will abound in every good work
How we think impacts how we live our whole lives. God wants to transform us, to make us more and more like Jesus, by changing the way we think—what the Bible calls the renewing of our minds. For five weeks, we'll survey five aspects of how God can and will change our minds, along with a prayer challenge for each week.
Read 2 Corinthians 9:6-11
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written:
"They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor;
their righteousness endures forever."
Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.
We each should decide in our hearts what and how to give, with no pressure, since "God loves a cheerful giver." God abundantly gives you all you need, in part to empower you to do good works abundantly.
How abundant a giver are you? It seems like an easy decision to give more because you'll receive more in return, but giving of yourself and your resources and trusting God to provide for your needs can be hard, especially when your resources are low. Ask God to show you what you can do to move more of your giving from sparing to generous, from scarce to abundant.
A prayer for the week
God, thank you for the gift of another day and the opportunities it brings. You are a good and generous God. Help me to live today with great anticipation of the abundant goodness you're bringing to me and those around me. Renew my mind so that I can see your good life, join in it, share it, and invite others to join in. Amen.
