Sunday, April 15: He went away and sold everything he had and bought it
We return to our occasional reading from beginning to end through the Gospel of Matthew, which emphasizes Jesus' divine nature and his status as the Messiah—as the Son of David, the Son of Man, and the Son of God.
Read Matthew 13:44-46
"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
"Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it."
Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure or a priceless pearl. Once it's found and its value understood, one would pay any price, make any sacrifice, do whatever is necessary to obtain it. And yet, the treasure is free to those who humbly accept it as a gift of God's grace. The gift is citizenship in God's eternal kingdom.
The emphasis in this story is on the supreme value of the treasure and the pearl. Take some time today to consider the immense value of your salvation, a gift purchased through the death of the sinless Son of God. Let thankfulness well up in your heart, and find ways to express that gratitude to Jesus today.
