Tuesday, August 7: Wisdom from Proverbs
Proverbs is a practical book filled with "sound bites" of God's wisdom. As we read, we need to remember that a proverb isn't a promise that God will always respond to our behavior in a certain way, but a memorable phrase that points to truth beyond itself. Proverbs are God's guidelines for wise living, not his guarantees for prosperity or blessing.
Read Proverbs 17:19
Whoever loves a quarrel loves sin;
whoever builds a high gate invites destruction.
Our culture loves a good debate, or even a knock-down argument, even sometimes among those who follow God. Honest disagreement on important issues will at times result in constructive deliberation. But here the writer advises that those who seek after quarrels and fights commit a sin each time they do.
Father, lead us away from petty arguments and speaking our opinion just to "be right." Instead, help us tear down the gates we build that divide us from others.
