Friday, August 10: Wisdom from Proverbs
Proverbs is a practical book filled with "sound bites" of God's wisdom. As we read, we need to remember that a proverb isn't a promise that God will always respond to our behavior in a certain way, but a memorable phrase that points to truth beyond itself. Proverbs are God's guidelines for wise living, not his guarantees for prosperity or blessing.
Read Proverbs 28:27
Those who give to the poor will lack nothing,
but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses.
In a parable that Jesus told, he said he'd be able to tell sheep from goats by which ones fed the hungry, showed hospitality to strangers, and otherwise cared for those who are marginalized by the world. How easy would it be to identify you by these standards?
Father, give us your eyes to see the needs of others and your heart to respond. Make us your hands to act on behalf of them.
