Jesus had just washed his disciples’ feet and had just celebrated the Passover meal uniquely, which focused upon his broken body and his spilled blood. He had just announced to his disciples his betrayal by Judas, his denial by Peter, and that all the others would forsake him. The disciples were stunned, discouraged, questioning and in denial about what was coming. They were unable and unwilling to understand what Jesus was talking about. Jesus knew he would be arrested later that evening. As he looked into the faces of his disciples, he knew they needed his words and support in this moment. They needed help with The Way Forward.
